Final Year project ideas for CSE students in 2026

Final Year project ideas for CSE students in 2026

Most students choose their final year project 3 weeks before the synopsis deadline. They copy a title from a seniors’ WhatsApp group, find out in week 6 that the dataset doesn’t exist, and rebuild everything in the last month.

This guide has 30 final year project ideas for CSE students in 2026, grouped by domain. Each idea has a stack, a viva hook, and a warning about where students stumble.

How to pick a final year project in 2026

Four questions sort most ideas in under 10 minutes.

  1. Can you finish a working version in 8 weeks? You need the last 4 weeks for testing, the report, and the demo. A project that is “almost done” at week 12 scores like one that was never started.
  2. Can you demo it live in 8 minutes? Panels remember what they saw run. Slides full of accuracy numbers fade fast.
  3. Does it touch real data or real users? 10 classmates using your app beat a perfect screenshot. Real data also hands you messy problems to talk about, and messy problems are what examiners ask about.
  4. Can you explain every line you submit? If a panel member asks why you chose XGBoost over a random forest, “the tutorial used it” ends the conversation.

If your answer to any of these is “I think so,” shrink the idea. Smaller projects that work get better marks than big ones that crash.

AI and machine learning project ideas

1. Resume screener with a skill gap report. Parse a resume and a job description, score the match with sentence embeddings, and list the missing skills. Stack: Python, spaCy, Sentence-BERT, FastAPI. The viva hook is showing where the model fails, like treating “React” and “ReactJS” as different skills, and how you fixed it.

2. Fake news detector for Hindi and English headlines. Build a TF-IDF and logistic regression baseline first, then fine-tune a multilingual transformer such as MuRIL. Report F1 score because accuracy hides class imbalance. Public datasets are small and skewed, so test on headlines you collect yourself and say so in the report.

3. Crop disease detection from leaf photos. Use transfer learning with MobileNetV2 on the PlantVillage dataset and export to TensorFlow Lite for a phone app. PlantVillage photos are shot on plain backgrounds, so test on 50 photos taken in an actual field. The accuracy drop you find is your best talking point.

4. Placement outcome analysis for your own college. Collect 3 batches of anonymized data with your placement cell’s permission, train a classifier, and explain which factors matter. Add a fairness check by branch and gender. Names never go into the dataset or the report.

5. Air quality forecasting for Delhi NCR. Pull station data from the CPCB, build an XGBoost model and an LSTM, and compare them on a 24-hour forecast. Add a simple web dashboard. The November pollution spike gives you a hard test case.

6. Indian Sign Language to text. MediaPipe hand landmarks feed a small classifier that runs on a webcam in real time. Start with 20 signs, because 200 will eat your semester. Collect samples from at least 5 people, otherwise the model recognizes only you.

7. UPI-style fraud detection. Fraud is rare, often under 1% of transactions, so plain accuracy tells you nothing. Handle the imbalance with class weights or SMOTE, report precision and recall, and use SHAP to explain each flagged transaction. Stack: scikit-learn, imbalanced-learn, SHAP.

Generative AI and agent project ideas

8. RAG chatbot for college notices and syllabus. Ingest PDFs, split them into chunks, store embeddings in FAISS or Chroma, and answer with a citation to the source page. Write a test set of 50 questions and measure how often the right chunk comes back. That measurement is what turns a demo into a project.

9. AI code reviewer for GitHub pull requests. A webhook receives a pull request, an LLM comments on bugs and style, and a rule layer blocks comments that quote secrets or invent file names. Stack: Python or Node, GitHub Apps API, or an LLM API. Report the API cost per review.

10. Hindi and English voice assistants for small shopkeepers. Whisper converts speech to text, an LLM parses “add 2 kg sugar to Sharma ji’s bill,” and a small database keeps the ledger. Test it in a noisy room, because shops are noisy.

11. Support email triage agent. The agent classifies each email, drafts a reply from a knowledge base, and passes it to a human when confidence is low. Build the human approval step first.

Data science and analytics project ideas

12. Delhi NCR rent and price dashboard. Use public datasets or a survey you run among 100 students and tenants. Check a website’s terms before scraping anything. Clean the data, find which sector or metro station drives rent most, and publish a Power BI dashboard.

13. Sales forecasting for a local shop. Ask a real shopkeeper for 12 months of bills. Clean them, forecast weekly demand with Prophet or ARIMA, and build a Power BI dashboard with reorder alerts. A shop owner telling the panel the forecast helped is worth more than any benchmark.

14. Telecom churn analysis with SQL and Power BI. Take a public churn dataset, write 10 SQL queries that answer business questions, and then build a model. End with 3 retention actions and an estimate of what each would save.

15. Review analysis for food delivery apps. Collect Google Play reviews through the official tools, classify sentiment, find complaint topics with BERTopic, and match complaint spikes to app release dates. The date match is the part that makes people lean forward.

Web and full-stack project ideas

16. Hostel and PG finder with owner approval. Use MERN with MongoDB geospatial queries (a 2dsphere index) to search by distance from a college or metro station. Add 3 roles: student, owner, admin. Listings go live only after an admin approves them. See our MERN stack projects list for more.

17. Campus placement portal. Students apply, companies shortlist, and the admin tracks every stage. Stack: Spring Boot, React, MySQL. Add email notifications and resume upload with a file size limit. More ideas on the Java projects page.

18. Multi-vendor store with a payment sandbox. Use Razorpay test mode and model orders as a state machine: placed, paid, shipped, delivered, and refunded. Lock stock during checkout so two buyers can’t buy the last item. Demo that exact race condition live.

19. Real-time collaborative whiteboard. Node, Socket.io, and an HTML canvas. Two people draw at once, a third joins late and sees the full board, and a dropped connection recovers. Our React JS project ideas post has frontend add-ons.

20. Telemedicine appointment system. Slot booking with database transactions to prevent double booking, a WebRTC video call, and a prescription PDF. Use dummy patients only. Real health data brings legal problems you don’t want in a student project.

Cloud and DevOps project ideas

21. CI/CD pipeline on AWS. GitHub Actions builds a Docker image, pushes it to ECR, and deploys to ECS or EC2 with Terraform. A CloudWatch alarm triggers a rollback after a bad release. Show a failed deploy rolling back during your demo. Nothing else impresses a panel as fast.

22. Cloud cost watchdog. A Lambda function reads billing data on a schedule, flags idle instances and unattached volumes, and sends a Slack or email alert. Watch your own API charges while building it, and set an AWS budget before you start.

23. Kubernetes autoscaling lab. Deploy a small API on minikube or kind, run k6 load tests, and graph how the Horizontal Pod Autoscaler reacts in Grafana. If cloud is your lane, the AWS training in Noida and DevOps training in Noida pages show what a hands-on syllabus covers.

Cybersecurity project ideas

24. Phishing URL detector as a Chrome extension. Extract features such as URL length, special characters, and domain age, then train on PhishTank links against the Tranco top sites list. Measure false positives on the top 1,000 sites. A detector that flags Google is useless, and your report should say how often yours does.

25. Network intrusion detection. Use CICIDS2017 and compare a random forest with a small neural network. NSL-KDD dates back to 1999 traffic, so mention that limit if you use it. Explain which attack types each model misses.

26. Zero-knowledge password manager. Encrypt in the browser with AES-GCM, derive the key from the master password with PBKDF2 through the Web Crypto API (or Argon2 compiled to WebAssembly), and store only ciphertext on the server. Write a threat model section: what an attacker gets if the database leaks.

Mobile, IoT, and other ideas

27. Hostel energy monitor. An ESP32 with current sensors sends readings over MQTT to a dashboard. Alert when a room’s usage doubles overnight. Measure for 2 weeks in a real hostel room, and you have real data.

28. Offline-first expense splitter in Flutter. Store data locally in SQLite and sync when the phone gets a signal. The hard part is conflict rules when 2 people edit the same expense offline. Document the rule you chose and why.

29. Blockchain certificate verifier. A Solidity contract on a public testnet such as Sepolia stores a hash of each certificate. A web page hashes an uploaded PDF and checks it against the chain. Keep personal data off-chain.

30. Document reader for visually impaired users. Capture a printed notice with the phone camera, run OCR with Tesseract in Hindi and English, and read the result aloud. Test it on real printed notices, because crumpled paper breaks OCR in ways clean scans never do.

How to present your final year project so it scores

Marks come from 4 things: a working demo, a clear report, a clean repository and your answers in the viva.

Demo order that works: 30 seconds on the problem, 5 minutes of live use, 2 minutes on the one hard thing you solved. Keep a recorded video as backup in case Wi-Fi dies.

Repository: write a README with setup steps, a screenshot, the architecture diagram and the dataset source. A panel member who can run your project in 10 minutes will trust the rest.

Report chapters: problem statement, literature survey of 8 to 10 papers or tools, design, implementation, testing, results with limits, and future work. Put your failures in the results chapter. They show you tested.

Questions to rehearse:

  • Why did you choose this algorithm or stack?
  • Where did your data come from, and what is wrong with it?
  • What breaks your project?
  • How did you test it?
  • What would you change with 3 more months?

Mistakes that cost marks

  1. Stopping at a notebook. A Jupyter notebook with 94% accuracy is homework. Wrap the model in an app or an API and measure it on data it has never seen.
  2. Cloning a famous app. Netflix and Instagram clones look the same in every batch. Pick a local problem with a real user you can name.
  3. Buying the code. Examiners often ask you to change something live. If you can’t, the marks go.
  4. Skipping tests. Write at least 10 test cases and report what failed.
  5. Writing the report in the last week. Write one chapter per week from week 3.

A 12-week plan

WeeksWhat to do
1 to 2Pick the idea, check data and API access, write the synopsis, split tasks in your team
3 to 4Collect data or design the database, draw the architecture, build the first end-to-end skeleton
5 to 8Build the core features, push to GitHub every day, write one report chapter per week
9 to 10Test, fix, measure results, add the one extra feature that makes your project stand apart
11Freeze features, finish the report, record the backup demo video
12Rehearse the demo twice and the viva questions once

FAQs

What is the best final year project for CSE students in 2026? A project that works, uses real data or real users, and that you can explain. A RAG chatbot with a measured test set and a full stack app with 10 real users both fit.

Can I do the project alone or should I join a team? Most colleges allow teams of 2 to 4. A team of 3 with clear roles (backend, frontend or model, testing and documentation) ships faster than a solo student, but each person must be able to explain the whole system.

Which language should I use? Python suits ML, data and generative AI work. Java with Spring Boot and JavaScript with React or Node suit web projects. Pick the one you already write comfortably. If you want a guided start, see our Python training in Noida and Java training in Noida pages.

How early should I start? Pick the idea and finish the synopsis in the first 2 weeks of the final year. The students who start in month 4 usually spend month 7 rushing.

Do final year projects help in placements? Interviewers often start with “tell me about your project.” A live link, a GitHub repository and honest results give you strong answers.
